PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Children’s
Day Treatment

A supportive place to learn, practice, and grow.

Fresh Coast Counseling’s Children’s Program provides structured mental health day treatment for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade who need more support than routine outpatient therapy can provide.

Care Designed for Children

Building resilience through connection and growth.

Children often communicate through behavior, play, movement, and relationships. Our program uses clear routines, visual supports, play-based learning, sensory-responsive strategies, co-regulation, and supportive relationships to help children feel safe, understood, and ready to practice new skills.

Who May Benefit from the Children’s Program?

The Children’s Program may be appropriate for elementary-age children whose emotional, behavioral, developmental, or mental health needs are significantly affecting life at home, at school, with peers, or in the community—and who need more structure and support than routine outpatient therapy can provide.

Anxiety, excessive worry, or avoidance

Depression, withdrawal, or low motivation

Difficulty managing strong emotions

ADHD or executive-functioning needs

Autism-related support needs

Anger, outbursts, or disruptive behavior

School avoidance or declining school functioning

Peer conflict or difficulty building friendships

Family conflict or difficulty following expectations

Trauma-related symptoms or difficulty feeling safe

A diagnosis or concern does not automatically determine whether day treatment is the right fit. Admission decisions are individualized and consider the child’s current needs, developmental functioning, safety, available supports, treatment goals, and the program’s ability to provide appropriate care.

Our team works with families and referral partners to understand the whole child—not just a diagnosis or difficult moment.

What a Day May Look Like

The Children’s Program follows a predictable four-hour routine that balances treatment, skill-building, movement, connection, and opportunities to practice new skills. The exact schedule may vary based on the needs of the children participating that day.

1. Welcome & Check-In

Children settle in, connect with staff, and prepare for the day.

2. Therapy & Treatment

Children participate in scheduled individual, family, or clinician-led group psychotherapy based on their treatment plans.

3. Skills Practice

Structured activities help children practice coping, emotional regulation, communication, problem-solving, and friendship skills.

4. Movement & Regulation

Developmentally appropriate movement and sensory-supportive activities help children regulate and re-engage.

5. Snack & Social Connection

Children have time for snack, routines, and supported interaction with peers.

6. Closing & Transition

The group reflects on the day, identifies successes, and prepares for pickup.

Not every part of the program day is psychotherapy.

Therapy, treatment-plan interventions, skills and support groups, and routine activities are clearly identified and provided by staff qualified for each role.

Treatment and Support for Each Child

Each child’s services are guided by an individualized treatment plan developed with the child, family, and treatment team. The type and amount of support may vary based on the child’s needs, goals, strengths, and progress.

Individual Therapy

Children meet one-to-one with an authorized clinician to work on treatment goals, understand emotions, practice coping strategies, and build confidence.

Group Psychotherapy

Clinician-led groups help children explore feelings, relationships, behavior patterns, and age-appropriate ways to respond to challenges.

Skills & Treatment-Plan Interventions

Qualified staff help children practice coping, emotional regulation, communication, problem-solving, and social skills connected to their treatment goals.

Family Involvement & Care Coordination

Families participate in planning and progress discussions, while the treatment team may coordinate with schools, providers, and other supports when authorized.

Services are clearly identified and provided by staff qualified for each role.

Skills practice, snack, movement, transitions, and other routine parts of the day are not described as psychotherapy.

A Voice in Treatment

Families Are Part of the Treatment Team

Families participate in assessment, treatment planning, progress reviews, safety planning, and transition decisions.

Parents and caregivers know their children in ways no treatment team can replace. Families help identify strengths, priorities, triggers, helpful strategies, and the changes that would make the greatest difference at home and in daily life.
Family participation is adapted to the child’s needs, treatment goals, and family circumstances.

Support Beyond the Program

Caregivers receive communication and guidance to help children practice useful skills at home.

Coordinated Support

With appropriate authorization, the team may collaborate with schools, therapists, prescribers, and other involved providers.

Enrollment & Referral Process

Families and referral professionals do not need to determine program eligibility on their own. Our team can review referral information, answer general questions, and determine whether an intake appointment may be appropriate.

1. Submission of Referral Form

Referrals can be submitted by parents, legal representatives, or community providers through our secure online portal.

2. Clinical Record Review

Our team reviews the referral and gathers relevant records to understand the youth's mental health and developmental history.

3. Screening and Intake

We conduct a comprehensive intake session to confirm eligibility and ensure our program is the safest, most appropriate setting for the youth.

Our team works with families and referral partners to understand the whole child—not just a diagnosis or difficult moment.
